On Friday the 16th of September or the last day of term 3 you will not need to get dressed into school uniform because it’s PYJAMA DAY! Come dressed in your pyjamas. You can come dressed in your dressing gown, your Ugg Boots, your onesie or normal pyjamas. Please don’t forget to bring a gold coin donation. The money we raise will go to the charity Kids Under Cover that helps children in need and prevents youth homelessness.

The grade 1/2 cohort had a fabulous day yesterday, sharing our favourite books and dressing up as our favourite characters. The day was topped off with a BookNic, where we all ate our lunch outside and read favourite parts of our stories to one another.

Yesterday the 1/2s had a wonderful celebration of all their inquiry learning. Children have developed a range of skills throughout the process and enjoyed the chance to share their understandings and ideas. Wonderful learning for everyone, even the teachers!

Some of our reflections from 1/2L –

If you see some rubbish on the ground pick it up and try not to litter because it affects the animals – Maggie

World War II was actually bigger than World War I. We study war so we don’t have it again – Zach

You need to plan everything before you start – Josh

I enjoyed inquiry because you get to design great stuff – Winter

Design was good because we built what we planned – Harrison

I learnt about the 12 best indigenous players in the AFL – Sunday

I designed a scarf – Connor

I saw people working really hard on their designs and I also learnt to work hard – Arel

You use different materials to design different things. You wouldn’t make a playground from paper – Winnie

I learnt what cats eat and how they use their claws – Verity

Before you design something you need to figure out what materials to use – Alice

It would be better if you put your rubbish in the bin so it’s doesn’t blow away and go to the ocean – Jessie

Designing is more fun than it sounds because you end up with something that might be a surprise – Henry

I learnt that designers might change their design because it might be tricky or take too long and that’s ok – Liam

I decided to do design because we could design what we wanted and we had fun – Sienna

I planted a sunflower – Archer

I learnt how much rubbish there was in our school and would like to change that – Poppy

My work was about gum nut babies inspired by some really, really old gum nut baby books – Sam

If you want to make a really good design you often need to take your time – Sarah

I researched and found that eight million people died in World War I – Riley

I loved planting the plantar box gardens with succulents. We chose succulents because they can be planted without roots. They grow well without water and sun – Violet

Today we had the pleasure of having some visitors from St John Ambulance come in and talk to the kids about basic first aid skills.

Quiz time ……

D is for ……?

R is for ……?

What 3 things do we need to know if we are calling 000?

Parents, you are not off the hook. You have some homework to complete …

Do you know what to do in an emergency?

Because we do! Today the 1/2s learnt what to do if we find a person on the floor, lying still. To stop this happening you need to put away things that aren’t safe. You can help too, just remember –

D is for Danger – You look for to you, to others and to the sick person.

R is for response – You talk to the person. If they don’t respond you squeeze their shoulders. Twice.

S is send for help – Call the ambulance – the number is 000.

1/2M were honoured to receive the very first Bell Primary School Specialist Award! Our school specialist teachers Chelsea (Art), Tom (Sport) and Andrew (Music) awarded us with the trophy last Friday and it has been proudly displayed in our room this whole week. The trophy was lovingly made by our wonderful Art teacher Chelsea! The award winning class is decided together by the specialists and is given to a class that has worked well and displayed the school values during all of their lessons. Well done 1/2M!

The 1/2s had a fabulous day out in the sun on Friday, getting nice and active during sessions 3 and 4 for the tabloid sports, run by our Junior School Council representatives. Everyone had a great time and really enjoyed working their way through all the activities. We had the limbo, stilt walking relays, three legged races, the giant parachute and silent ball,  just to name a few. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and there were bucket loads of plus ones given out! Special mention to our terrific 1/2 JSC reps, you were fantastic! We couldn’t be prouder of you!

1/2L’s Ride to School Day Graph

Posted by moya | Posted in Celebrations and Special Days, Maths | Posted on March 24, 2014

Last week we made a graph to show how 1/2L got to school on Ride to School Day. It is a pictograph with some beautiful drawings! We talked about the different parts of a graph and came up with our own 5 start criteria.

Graphs need to –

  • display the data you collected
  • have a title
  • have an x and y axis with labels
  • have labels for the data (so we know what it is)
  • be neat and tidy

We were pretty proud of ourselves as no one in our class drove to school. Great team effort! We then interpreted the data, here’s what we came up with!

~

In 1/2L we had people who rode bikes, people who scooted and people who walked to school. Poppy

People came to school in different ways. Sienna

Riding bikes was the most common, walking was second and scooting was third. Sarah

We think our grade has different ways to other classes. Winnie

Lots of people in our class had bikes to use. Henry

On ride to school day no one in 1/2L drove to school. Verity

We made a pictograph. Alice

We drew lovely pictures. Archie

Our class was using making less pollution because nobody used a car. Zach

Nobody took the train to school. Connor

Scooters was the smallest. Lughan

The y axis goes to the sky. Liam

No one took public transport. Malachy

I can see that the people that walked was the almost the tallest. Winter

None of our class made pollution. Violet

Five people rode their scooters. Jessie

Eleven people rode their bikes. Riley

Seven people walked. Josh

People rode their bikes more than their scooters. Harrison

Bikes are one of the most popular things to ride in our class. Arel
