Learning about Learning!

Today we had a think about our school value ‘Learning’.

We discussed ways that we can keep our learning curve going up, up, up and some of our ideas were…

  • Sit in a good learning position
  • Sit with people who help us learn
  • use learning tools available in the classroom
  • If someone is interrupting our learning, ask them to stop or move to a different seat

We then did an activity about how we can make our 2016 amazing, awesome, good, fantastic, epic (or any other adjective we could think of).  Here is some of our incredible work!

On Tuesday we explored the school value of ‘Teamwork’.

Students in grades 1/2K and 1/2R were given a design brief and the following items;

A3 paper

8 strands of spaghetti

1 marshmallow

1M of string

1M of masking tape

Task; Build the tallest tower using the materials provided

Student Talk

Klara – We are making it the way we have drawn it.

William – I don’t want to be in that group anymore because I don’t want it to be that way.

Isaiah- We found a new strategy. We broke the marshmallow up to create glue.

Phoebe – We need to work together as a team for this to work.

Our tower is 35 centimetres tall.

Our tower was the tallest. It measured 50 centimetres.

This activity had lots of appeal. It was;

  • Creative
  • Hands-on, active and interactive
  • Memorable
  • Challenging

2016 Start Up – Learning about Respect in 1/2ST

Posted by reneetimion | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on February 2, 2016

Today students in 1/2ST discussed our school value of ‘Respect.’ Students were asked what they thought it meant. Here are a few of our contributions:

“Respect means to care about other people.”

“It is being nice to people and sharing.”

“You have to respect the classroom by picking up your rubbish and not breaking things.”

We then read the book ‘How the Murray River was Made.’ I wonder if your child can explain the story to you at home? (The old lady….the snake!)

Students learnt about the Wurundjeri people, the traditional custodians of the land we learn on. 1/2ST then looked at an Aboriginal map of Australia and had some great discussions about the Torres Straight Islanders and various other indigenous groups and their languages. We then made some flags to hang around our rooms to show our respect. Here are some of the flags we made:

We loved using our creativity and making flags using different materials! The challenge at the end was to combine all three flags (Aboriginal, Torres Straight Islander and the Australian) to make a new one. We think we did a pretty great job!
